TURA: The Tura deputy commissioner has in his war of words against his counterpart and Williamnagar Deputy Commissioner branded the civil service officer of having links with militants leading to his transfer from East Garo Hills district.

Tura DC Pravin Bakshi has claimed in a series of emails issued to media persons that his counterpart in Williamnagar, Vijay Kumar Mantri was given the marching order in July for having links with militants- a serious charge on a fellow bureaucrat. He has also accused Mantri of leaking a report to The Shillong Times over an alleged scam in the Total Sanitation Campaign for construction of school toilets in East Garo Hills estimated at a little over Rs 5 crore.

However, a political angle into the sudden transfer last month has not gone unnoticed. The transfer order of the deputy commissioner by the Mukul Sangma government took place eight days after the Chief Minister failed to inaugurate a suspension bridge in Williamnagar following strong opposition by villagers.

The chief minister was supposed to inaugurate the 175 meter bridge connecting Baiza A’bagre with Ganingbibra on June 27th but had to cancel the event due to villagers’ opposition to politicians’ participation. The deputy commissioner was transferred eight days later.
