SHILLONG: The office of the Syiem of Mylliem on Friday informed that Iewduh (Bara Bazar) will remain closed on August 12 in view of a public meeting that will chalk out various steps aimed at improving the general standards and the overall surroundings of one of the oldest traditional markets of the North East region.

The public meeting has been called by the KHADC and the Syiem of Mylliem. The meeting, scheduled to start at 9 am, would impress on the need to keep the market and its surrounding clean.

While talking to newsmen on Friday, Hima Mylliem Myntri in charge of Iewduh affairs, Kephas Langstieh, said that during the meeting a formal announcement would be made of the decisions taken on July 28 on the measures that would be initiated for proper maintenance of Iewduh including improvement of infrastructures like footpaths and general cleanliness.

Langstieh, further, informed that a ban on sale of liquor inside Iewduh was being looked into to protect the sanctity of the market.

He said all porters ferrying goods from Iewduh will have to register themselves with the Hima Mylliem after which they would be provided with uniforms and badges.

“All dajus (porters) will have to get their registration and non-tribals porters will also have to obtain labour license,” Langstieh said.

He also informed that the KHADC will write to the Shillong Municipal Board on the need to re-position water pipes and it will also identify areas where public toilets and dustbins would be constructed.

The meeting further decided to abolish levying of taxes for goods less than 50 kg and take steps to prevent middle men from taking 1 kg from every 10 kg of goods sold in the market.

Other decisions taken at the meeting included disallowing conversion of shops into residential houses inside Iewduh, construction of public toilets, systematic positioning of water pipes, problems of the vendors in the market and others.
