Shillong: The East Khasi Hills Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals under the chairmanship of Deputy Commissioner Sanjay Goyal, at its meeting held recently, has viewed with concern the prevalent practice of bull fights and performances.

The Deputy Commissioner has, under the provision of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 as amended by Central Act 26 of 1982, ordered a ban on bull fighting in the district.

First Information Report (FIR) will be registered against any one engaged in the sport of bull fighting and stringent action will be taken as per provisions of the Act, he added.

The Deputy Commissioner further informed that slaughter houses should take necessary steps in preventing cruelty to animals so as to avoid implications of the Act.

He has requested interested NGOs to come forward and register themselves as a Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) under the District Administration.
