SHILLONG: Chief Minister Mukul Sangma has reiterated the Government’s commitment to deal with the law and order situation in Garo Hills despite criticism from several quarters.

Sangma also said that the problem of militancy was inherited by the State and had not surfaced all of a sudden.

The Chief Minister reviewed the law and order situation in Garo Hills with Home Minister Roshan Warjri, DGP P.J.P. Hanaman and others during a State Security Commission meeting held here on Thursday.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, the Chief Minister stressed the need for collective responsibility in talking militancy.

He also said that supply of arms and ammunition has been going on though the porous border and the matter should have been dealt with by the Centre.

However, he said that with Central security forces being deployed in Garo Hills, the State Government would be able to tackle the situation.

The Chief Minister also acknowledged the Centre’s support in providing assistance to raise two more police battalions in the State.
