Security beefed up for I-Day

SHILLONG: Incessant showers, coupled with the bandh kept the residents in Shillong indoors for most of the day on Thursday, second day of the 48 hours shutdown called by proscribed HNLC.

Normal life came to a standstill due to the shutdown.

However, no untoward incident was reported from any part of the State during the bandh, which will end at 6pm on Friday.

Business establishments, schools and colleges, financial institutions remained closed, while few public transports plied on the road.

The 48-hour bandh called by HNLC to protest against the NGT ban on rate hole mining and boycotting of Independence Day celebration evoked mixed response in the capital city.

While shops and other establishments remained shut during the day, the Government offices in the East Khasi Hills functioned normally.

The overall attendance in offices of East Khasi Hills district was recorded at 70 percent.

The percentage in Secretariat was around 87, official sources said.

Several vehicles were seen plying in the city.

Many local taxis were also seen operating in the city though the number of passengers was very less.

However, many road side shops were seen open throughout the day.

Meanwhile, security has been beefed up in all the sensitive places across the state in the view of Independence Day celebrations on Friday and HNLC-called bandh.
