SHILLONG: The State Commission for Women and the recently formed Child Rights Commission have denied allegations that their heads were political appointees.
Reacting to a news report, Meghalaya State Commission for Women (MSCW) chief Theilin Phanbuh on Monday said that the members of the Commission were not affiliated to any political group and the Commission has always reported crime cases to the police and continuous follow up action is taken.
Phanbuh also justified the Commission’s silence on the growing instances of crimes against women and children in the State saying that they were not pressure groups and not condemning the incident in the newspapers does not mean that they were not serious about the growing cases of crime against women.
Reacting to a query on the low conviction rates in the State in the matter of crime against women, she said that the Commission has written to the Secretary, Law department on the issue and the huge number of cases piled up especially in the District Council Courts.
She also said that the Commission has taken up several awareness programmes on the rights of people and the issue of crime against women.
