38 Japanese Encephalitis cases in state

SHILLONG: A 22-year-old woman from South West Garo Hills died among the 38 confirmed cases of Japanese Encephalitis in the State.

This is the first instance of death due to Japanese Encephalitis after many cases were reported early part of this month.

Confirming this, Joint Director of Health Services, in-charge integrated disease surveillance project, Dr RO Budnah said on Thursday that the patient died recently after she went home following the treatment at Tura Civil Hospital.

The woman hailing from Dombagre under Zigzak PHC, South Garo Hills was diagnosed with Japanese Encephalitis on August 21. Later she was admitted at Tura Civil Hospital for treatment.

“Since there are as many as 38 confirmed cases of Japanese Encephalitis, we are taking precautions so that the disease does not spread further, Dr Budnah said.

The districts which are not affected by the disease are East Garo Hills, North Garo Hills, South Garo Hills and South West Khasi Hills.
