SHILLONG: The State Government has decided to create a separate corpus fund to speed up the release of compensation amount to the victims affected by various forms of violence.

“We have taken this decision in compliance with the recent ruling of the Supreme Court. The apex court has clearly specified that the compensation payment should be released in a time bound manner,” Chief Minister Mukul Sangma told newsmen after a Cabinet meeting here on Thursday.

He said that the corpus funds would be made available to all the respective Deputy Commissioners to allow them to release compensation amount without any delay.

“We have indicated an amount between Rs. 20 to Rs. 25 lakh to be allotted to each of the Deputy Commissioners as the corpus fund,” the Chief Minister said.

Meanwhile, Sangma said that they have issued necessary directives to the Political Affairs department to collect details about the status on payment of compensation relating to several forms of incidents like ethnic clashes, natural calamities and acts of violence.

The Chief Minister admitted that there has been undue delay in the payment of the compensation in the past since the assessment and processing of the files is a time- consuming process.
