Guwahati: Lok Sabha member and former Union minister Bijoya Chakraborty, who is set to take over as the new National Commission for Women (NCW) chairperson, on Thursday said she will take up the new assignment with all grit.

“About half of our country’s population is women. But a vast number of them are subjected to injustice and torture. I shall do all within my capacity to emend it,” she told reporters here, informing of her new assignment.

“Pending cases must be disposed faster and women must be encouraged to report any crime against them,” she said.

Ms Chakraborty added that she would pursue the case of recent killing of a teenaged girl by militants in Assam for allegedly working as police informer. “Crimes against women are on the rise and I shall try to ensure that it becomes a decreasing trend by creating greater awareness,” she added. Ms Chakraborty is likely to take over charge within the next couple of days. (UNI)
