MLCU workshop sheds light on how to avert suicides

SHILLONG: With suicide rates on the rise in almost every part of the world it is important that efforts and steps are taken to check this crisis and start working towards helping those living with this issue.

Keeping this in view, the Department of Counselling Psychology, Martin Luther Christian University, organized a three-day programme to mark World Suicide Prevention Day and to sensitize the society, especially the youth, on how to deal with this crisis and also how to help and counsel those with suicidal tendencies.

On Tuesday, a workshop on Crisis Intervention was held, led by renowned psychologist Dr. N. Achouba Singh.

The workshop was organized with the objective to equip the students of the Department on how to deal with a crisis of suicide and how to treat those suffering with suicidal tendencies.

During the workshop, Dr. Singh recounted many situations based from his own experiences dealing with suicide cases.

On Thursday, the department organized a musical evening in continuance with their effort to spread awareness about the rise in suicide cases in the State and the North East region.

Students of the Department of Fine Arts, MLCU, Garo Baptist Church, Naga Christian Fellowship and many more performed in the programme.

A testimony by a person who overcame his suicidal tendencies after a failed suicide attempt was also given during the programme.

Winners of the poster making competition which was held earlier in the week were also awarded on the occasion.
