TURA: Shalom Meghalaya has strongly condemned the inhuman and brutal caning of villagers suspected to be police informers by the GNLA.

“The attempt to intimidate and create panic and fear psychosis through gruesome acts will never succeed as truth can never be stifled. Shalom Meghalaya appeals to all citizens to join it in denouncing violence perpetuated and to act together in the interest of the people of Garo Hills,” it said in a statement.

It may be mentioned that the GNLA had defended its actions saying that all those involved were either police informers or extortionists using the name of the GNLA.

Meanwhile, Rev. P.B.M. Basaiawmoit has sought the intervention of the Government on the issue of caning of villagers by GNLA.

In an e-mail to the Chief Minister, Basaiawmoit said that news channels had telecast the news that militants in Garo Hills had thrashed villagers alleged to be police informers.

“Vivid video of thrashing was shown. What is being done by the Government to provide security to the villagers and to stop such demeaning actions?” Basaiawmoit asked in the mail.

According to Basaiawmoit, it is a violation of human rights. “I am sure that your Government has intervened appropriately and proactively,” Basaiawmoit added.
