State to launch its own green campaign on Oct 2

SHILLONG: Along with the launch of the nationwide Swacch Bharat Abhiyan (Clean India Campaign), the State will witness the launch of its own Clean and Green Meghalaya Campaign on October 2.

Chief Minister Mukul Sangma will launch the campaign along with the Swacch Bharat Abhiyan at Dakopgre in Tura on October 2.

While the Swacch Bharat Abhiyan will primarily focus on cleanliness and sanitation, the Clean and Green Meghalaya Campaign will be a mission mode programme which would concentrate on plantation, protection of catchment areas, building partnerships with the youth and other volunteers to sustain green initiatives and protect the environment.

The Campaign is being launched under the Meghalaya Mission Green which falls within the ambit IBDLP.

It shall involve the Nokmas and all village level institutions like VECs, village water & sanitation committees, village health & sanitation committees and all government functionaries at all levels and encourage competitions between different localities and villages to get Green Awards in recognition of the innovative interventions relating to environment.

Through documenting and social media, innovative green initiatives shall be rewarded and replicated and green clubs will be formed everywhere. There shall be a target to enrol 10,000 youth as Clean & Green Meghalaya volunteers as soon as possible. At the same time there shall be a media campaign to document all good practices in the state and humble beginnings.

The Chief Minister will honour the awardees of the Cleanest Locality Award in West Garo Hills during the launching programme.
