Rajnath to assess flood situation today

SHILLONG: A week after the flash floods and landslides, eight persons are still missing in Garo Hills though the death toll on Tuesday stood at 55 even as an emergency meeting of MUA was held on Tuesday under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Mukul Sangma to assess the flood situation.

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh will be visiting Garo Hills to assess the situation on Wednesday.

Last week, the Union Minister of state for Home Kiren Rijiju visited Garo Hills and assessed the damage due to the natural calamity. The state government has sought Rs 2000 crore to tide over the situation.

A government statement on Tuesday said that light showers are likely to occur in some places in the State in the next few days.

The bridge at Krishnai (NH-61) is now open for all types of vehicles. Restoration work is going on in full swing in roads that are still closed.

Power was restored in Kharkutta and Dainadubi area upto Mendipathar in North Garo Hills district and Baghmara in South Garo Hills district. Restoration work is still going on in other areas. Earlier, before leaving for New York, the Prime Minister had announced that while Rs 2 lakh will be provided as ex gratia to the relatives of the deceased, Rs 50,000 will be released to the injured from the Prime Minister’s National Relief fund. However, the State Government is yet to release any ex gratia for the relatives of the deceased and also for the injured from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.
