ADC’s brother, three others held for extortion

SHILLONG: Police on Friday arrested four persons including the brother of Ri-Bhoi district Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC), I Mawlong, for their alleged involvement in extortion from vehicles in Sohiong, East Khasi Hills.

The arrested persons were identified as Lamsing Kharsyntiew, Tamdor Nongrang both from Mawlai Mawkynroh and Kitlang Lyngdoh and Auldrin Thabah from Mairang.

According to police, the accused had used the official vehicle (ML-01 2157) of the ADC and a local taxi (ML-05 0211) for carrying out their extortion activities.

Police informed that the ADC had sent her brother to Mairang on some errands, but when the accused reached Sohiong they extorted money from a truck and five Tata mobile vehicles posing as Government officials.

Police also informed that the accused also assaulted a driver of one of the Tata mobile vehicles.

It is learnt that the accused had collected Rs 5000 to Rs 15000 from each of the the vehicles.

Police sources, expressed surprise over how the ADC, who is also the Project Director of DRDA, allowed her brother to use her official vehicle for going to Mairang.
