6 candidates named in SCPCR panel

SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Cabinet on Friday approved the names of six members of the State child rights panel.

Eight names were short listed before the Cabinet approved six names for appointment as members of the State Commission for Protection of Child Rights. The six members are Lungsimon Lyngdoh, Dr. Flourette G. Dkhar, Judith Shadap, Carmo Debritto Noronha, Henritha R. Marak and Lenitha M. Sangma Chief Minister Mukul Sangma said that with the appointment of six members the SCPCR has now become a full-fledged body.

It was after the intervention of the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) that the State Government constituted the SCPCR for protection of child rights in the State as per the requirement mentioned in the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights Act, 2005.

The Commission’s mandate is to ensure that all laws, policies, programmes and administrative mechanisms are in consonance with the child rights perspective as enshrined in the Constitution of India and also the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. The ‘child’ is defined as a person between the age group of 0 to 18 years.
