SHILLONG: The 40 buses being run by the Shillong Public Transport Service (SPTS) besides being a blessing for the commuters of the city has also helped a great deal in reducing the traffic congestion.
Negating earlier fears that the buses would further add to the traffic mismanagement in and around the city the buses have actually reduced the volume of traffic in the city.
Confirming this, Additional Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Herbert Lyngdoh said, “These buses have helped in reducing the traffic snarls across the city.”
According to Lyngdoh, a majority of commuters prefer these buses over their own private vehicles which has resulted in decline in traffic snarls.
Reacting to a query, Lyngdoh said the traffic problem would further reduce once the remaining buses hit the roads.
“If more buses will ply then people would stop using their own vehicles. So we can expect that the traffic problem would be further reduced,” Lyngdoh added.
Following the huge success of the buses in Shillong, there has been a growing demand for introduction of the buses in other districts also. As of now, only 40 buses are plying in and around the city. More routes would be added and the frequency would improve once the remaining 80 buses are pressed into service, a Transport official claimed.
