Governor reviews functioning of private varsities

SHILLONG: Governor K.K. Paul, in his capacity as the Visitor of private universities of the State, on Wednesday reviewed their working at a meeting held at Raj Bhavan on Wednesday.

The review meeting was attended by the Chancellors and Vice-Chancellors of the private universities who gave an update on the functioning of their respective varsities.

The State Government was represented by the Principal Secretary, Education department.

The Governor stressed on the need for a conducive academic atmosphere in the University campus and also emphasized on the need for a compact campus.

The Governor highlighted the need for sufficiency of basic infrastructure including library, journals and laboratories for science and technical courses, research and publications, sports and cultural activities. It was emphasized that the universities should be able to impart quality education through well reputed and well qualified faculty.

There is a particular need for introducing innovative courses in the tertiary sector, so as to suit the young boys and girls of North East and specifically Meghalaya, the Governor said, adding that it would ensure that the students of the State do not have to go out to other areas of the country for higher studies.

The courses should be such that after the completion of the studies, the students should become readily employable. For higher research, the universities should find affiliation with the National Academic Database, he told the varsities.
