AIUDF moves court against news channel
Guwahati:Assam’s principal Opposition party, AIUDF, on Monday filed a defamation case against national news channel News X for airing a report, linking the AIUDF with jehadi activities. An AIUDF spokesperson said here separate defamation cases have been filed against the news channel in Dhubri and Goalpara districts of the state by the respective district committees of the party. The defamation suit has been filed against seven top officials of News X and its associates, including the CEO and MD of News X. News X had aired a report, based on a purported intelligence note, that the AIUDF and its chief Badruddin Ajmal have been supporting jehadi militants in Assam and even recruiting youths for the jehadis. Mr Ajmal is a Lok Sabha member from Dhubri and an international-level business, specialising in perfume business. (UNI)
Two tribal youths kidnapped from east Tripura
Agartala:Banned National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) militants kidnapped two tribal youths belonging to CPI(M), last night from Maya Kumar Para area in east Tripura. According to police, heavily armed militants had raided the house of CPI(M), Gandacherra divisional committee member Falguni Tripura at around 1930 hrs on Sunday. They kidnapped her son Alindra (22) and his friend Gunodhar Tripura (18) at gun point. Mr Tripura was not available at the time of the incident. The militants had threatened Mr Tripura’s wife to kill the duo if the police was informed about the incident, said O C police said adding that the families were yet to receive any call for ransom. Police said, the kidnappers were known to Ms Tripura and they had clue about the whereabouts of the kidnappers. Police officials including Tripura State Rifles and BSF have rushed to the spot, police added. DIG (Northern Range) K Reang said BSF authority had been asked to make extra deployment across the entire eastern stretch along Indo-Bangladesh border, to trace the culprits.(UNI)
Two arrested for demanding ransom from engineer
Itanagar:Two persons were arrested for demanding huge ransom from the executive engineer of a central government organisation, the police said on Monday. By threatening with dire consequences since November 3 last. Achi Tallo and Arun Tayung, both from East Kameng district, were arrested on Sunday, SP in-charge Deepankar Mishra said. On receipt of a complaint, a police team led by of the police station officer in-charge inspector T Bage had laid a trap in the engineer’s residence here for the last two days and the duo was caught, he said. DGP S Nithyanandam announced cash award for each member of the team and exhorted the police force to work in unison for making Arunchal Pradesh crime-free. “Without the cooperation of the civil society the police cannot tackle crime alone,” he said. Two tribals kidnapped by NLFT militants
Agartala:Two tribals, including son of a ruling CPI(M) leader, have been allegedly kidnapped by the National Liberation Front of Tripura militants from Manyakumarpara, a tribal hamlet in Dhalai district, the police said on Monday. A group of about eight to ten ultras armed with sophisticated weapons raided the village last night and kidnapped Alindra Tripura (22) and Gunadhar Tripura, SP Police control, Uttam Bhaumick said. Alindra is the son of former village chairman and ruling CPI(M) leader, Falguni Tripura. The ultras have demanded ransom for their release, the SP said. The ultras might have sneaked into Chittagong Hill Tract (CHT) of Bangladesh as the border is not very far from the place of occurrence, Bhaumick said. The police and Tripura State Rifles have launched a search operation in the area.(PTI)
Bill to enable Mizo women to inherit property
Aizawl:The Mizo women will be able to inherit property and their marriages cannot be terminated at the whims of their husbands once the proposed Mizoram Marriage, Divorce and Inheritance of Property Bill, 2014, is passed by the Assembly. The Bill will be introduced in the next Assembly session beginning on Tuesday, S R Zokhuma, Additional Secretary to the Assembly said. The Bill has already been submitted to the Assembly Secretariat by the government for introduction in the session, he said. Women organisations in the state have been demanding legislation on divorce and inheritance of property for a long time as the Mizo women can be easily divorced by their husbands as per the Mizo Customary law.
