Muzaffarnagar riots inquiry commission seeks extension
Muzaffarnagar:With its tenure ending, the one-man inquiry commission appointed by Uttar Pradesh government on Muzfarranagar riots has sought an extension. The commission of retired judge of Allahabad High Court Vishnu Sahai, constituted on September 9 last year, had twice been given extension for six months each and its tenure ended on Sunday. The commission has sought more time to complete its inquiry and will have its next sitting on November 26 here, Commission sources said. District Magistrate Koshal Raj Sharma said on Monday that authorities have not yet received any notification on extension of the commission’s tenure. The state government had asked the commission to probe the violence starting from Kawal incident on August 27, 2013 and submit its reports in two months but later the deadline was extended. The Commission was also asked to look into administrative lapses, if any, in controlling the violence in Muzaffarnagar and surrounding districts which left over 60 people dead while thousands of others were displaced. 400 kg explosive, 1700 detonators seized in J’khand
Ranchi: In a major haul, security forces seized 400 kg of local explosives and over 1,700 detonators during an anti-Naxal operation in poll-bound Jharkhand on Monday. The operation was carried out by the elite CoBRA commando troops of CRPF alongwith the Jharkhand ‘Jaguars’ police unit in the Bokakhar-Ranidah area of Latehar district early this morning. According to officials, the seized items include 1,745 detonators, three gas cylinder based Improvised Explosive Devices of 50 kg each, a 5kg cane bomb, 400kg of urea mixed with petrol, 10kg of gun powder, nitro sulphide wighing approximately 1 kg, two large cutter machines, two drill machines, 400 syringes, tool boxes, electronic gadgets and 200 pressure cookers used to prepare IEDs. “It is suspected that the Naxals would have used these explosives to target security forces and polling parties during the forthcoming Assembly polls in the state,” a senior security officer said. The state will go to polls in five phases starting November 25 and counting of votes will take place on December 23. (PTI)
2 children among 5 killed in blaze at Outer Delhi factory
New Delhi:Five people, including two children, died in a fire that broke out in the wee hours on Monday at a paper-plate making factory in the Begumpur area of Outer Delhi. The deceased have been identified as Niranjan (5), Nilesh (11), Shivam (15), Shravan Kumar (17) and Nitin (26) who, police said, were all relatives of the factory owner. “All five died of suffocation because of the smoke,” said a fire official. The blaze was reported at 3.14 A.M. and eight fire tenders were dispatched to the spot to fight the flames. The fire was completely doused by 5:50 A.M., the official added. “The incident took place at A-305, Rajeev Vihar, in Begumpur. The cause of the fire is yet to be established. Those killed were relatives of the factory owner. A case is being registered in this regard,” said a senior police official. (PTI)
Father refuses to buy mobile, boy kills self
Behrampore: A middle-school student allegedly committed suicide in Murshidabad district by consuming pesticide after his father, a farmer, could not afford to buy him an expensive mobile of his choice. The 15-year-old boy Masud Sarkar was a class VIII student of Tentulia High School at Tentulia village. Masud’s father Mabibul Sarkar is a poor farmer, who turned down the boy’s demand for a touchscreen mobile. The family had two ordinary mobile phone sets. An unnatural death case has been lodged in this connection, Additional Superintendent of Police K Kannan said. Subrata Biswas, Head Master of Tentulia High School said, Masud was an average student but was obedient and polite. “This suicide incident which was a result of disappointment induced by failure to get a trendy phone has happened for the first time in our school,” he said.A memorial service was being held in the school on Monday, he said. Fire breaks out in Jammu hospital, no casualties reported
Jammu:Fire broke out at a super speciality hospital here due to short-circuit in the battery bank affecting the power supply but no casualties were reported, hospital authorities said on Monday. “Fire broke out due to short-circuit in the battery bank of the hospital resulting in total electricity blackout in the hospital on Sunday,” Medical Superintendent of the hospital, Dr Ramesh Gupta said. Fire extinguishers were pressed into service and fire was brought under control, he said adding that there was no injury to any one among patients and staff in the fire. “The fire resulted in a total blackout of electricity in the hospital, however as of today electricity has been resorted to some portion of the hospital whereas work is on to restore power in remaining parts of the hospital”, he added. Killer bee attack leaves one dead in Chhattisgarh
Korba:A minor girl has died after being stung severely by honey bees in Korba district of Chhattisgarh, police said on Monday. The victim –Dhanraso Kanwar (12)– was with her aunt when bees attacked them in Batati village forests under Kartala yesterday, a police official said. Jhulobai (40) along with her niece Dhanraso and a neighbour–Sukhan Bai (35) had gone to nearby forests for collecting wood. On seeing bees, they fled towards the village. Meanwhile, the girl fell down while running and came under the attack of bees, police said. The other two women informed the villagers about the incident following which they rushed to spot and took the girl to a local hospital where she was declared dead, he said. Jhulobai, who also suffered a number of stings was admitted to a local hospital for treatment, the official said. A case has been registered and forest officials have been informed about it, he added. (PTI)
