SHILLONG: The Excise department seized 64 packets of ganja from one Shanlang Khongsit of Tyrsad village, East Khasi Hills at Paltan Bazar here on Tuesday afternoon.

Excise personnel made the seizure during a random checking at Iewduh area.

Sources revealed that the case is being handled by Excise Inspector J.H. Sangma.

Surprisingly, Khongsit was apprehended at around 11am and was kept at the DC’s Office instead of being handed over to the police.

East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police M. Kharkrang, however, said that the Excise department had not handed over the accused to the police since they would pursue the case on their own.

Meanwhile, CSWO president, Agnes Kharshiing, while expressing surprise that no legal action was taken against the accused, alleged that the Excise department did not follow the mandatory procedure of weighing the exact quantity of ganja that was seized.
