SHILLONG: Downplaying criticism over the delay in filing chargesheet against Cabinet Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh, who is allegedly involved in the sensational education scam as unearthed by the CBI, the East Khasi Hills district police chief M Kharkrang has said that police will go by the merit of the case.

Speaking to reporters recently, the SP said that there was no pressure from any quarter to go slow on the case.

“The CBI’s failure to hand over the relevant papers to police has delayed the probe,” he said.

“We are not sitting idle, we will move the High Court to get the papers seized by CBI for our investigation,” the SP said and assured that police would not get influenced while carrying out the investigation.

After the filing of chargesheet against Ampareen’s Cabinet colleague Deborah Marak, pressure is mounting on police to investigate education scam with urgency. The Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate in July this year had asked the CBI to hand over the necessary papers to police, but the CBI subsequently filed a petition in the Court which resulted in the Court directing the police to seek the intervention of the High Court to get the seized papers by CBI.

The petition of the CBI was that since the probe into the scam was ordered by the High Court, it was felt necessary to seek the intervention of the Court before handing over the seized papers.
