Need to tap state’s tourism potential: HDR

SHILLONG: As part of the 100 days festival of the Government of Meghalaya, the Office of the Registrar of Co-operative Societies, Meghalaya on Friday organized the Mawlongbna Winter Festival 2014 at Mawlongbna Multipurpose Co-operative Society Ltd at Umkhakoi, Mawlongbna under Mawsynram Community and Rural Block.

Minister for Cooperation H. D.R.Lyngdoh, who graced the function as the chief guest said that Mawlongbna Winter Festival was organized by the Cooperation Department to promote rural tourism and cooperation among the people of the areas.

Lyngdoh said that the Umkhakoi Water Reservoir which was constructed a few years back has become popular as a tourist destination and also stressed the need to explore the untapped tourism potential in the area and to make Mawlongbna as one of the major tourist destination.

Lyngdoh informed that the Government has introduced different schemes to promote rural areas which the cooperative societies can avail the prospect to develop human resources by enhancing their employability and create avenues for income generation to uplift the standard of living and to encourage conservation and protection of scenic beauty.
