Dhoni likely to play final ODI

0

DHARAMSALA: The Indian team management has not yet sought a cover for skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who sustained a thumb injury before the fourth ODI against England at Mohali, increasing the possibility of his playing in the final match on Sunday.

In fact, the Indian skipper was seen actively participating in a soccer session at the picturesque stadium here dispelling doubts about his participation in the final one-dayer.

While the English team took a break from their training session, a relaxed Indian side enjoyed their soccer session in the afternoon.

Dhoni has sustained injuries in the past during the training sessions but has shown enough grit to come out and lead the side admirably.

There were doubts about the Indian captain’s participation in the third one-dayer against Pakistan in New Delhi earlier this month and Dinesh Karthik was flown in as a cover. However, the skipper not only led the side but was also awarded man-of-the-match for his captaincy.

It was after a long time that the Indian players looked a happy bunch while playing their customary football match unlike some of the other times when it looked as if they are going through a routine drill.

Someone like Rohit Sharma, who tends to get lost easily when he goes through those prolonged bad patches, was seen enjoying the most and rightly so after his fine performance at the top of the order in Mohali.

Virat Kohli was hit by the football and he was out of action for a brief period before the match resumed again. On the cricketing front, the pitch is expected to help the batsmen and with the sun beating down, it can become conducive for strokeplay.

However, the open nature of the ground and the cool morning breeze will also keep the seamers like Bhuvneshwar Kumar interested on a strip that curator Sunil Chauhan termed as “sporting wicket.” (PTI)

NONGSTOIN: A crowd of over 2000 people manhandled police personnel and damaged their vehicles after a police Sub-Inspector allegedly assaulted a truck driver here on Friday.

The trucker, Wallambok Kurbah from Nongkhliaw village, was on his way to Nongstoin after loading coal from Nongpyndeng depot. When the truck reached a petrol pump near Rani Motors the Sub-Inspector, R Sten, stopped Kurbah and allegedly began beating him for unknown reasons.

People who were nearby tried to stop the police personnel but to no avail even as two more policemen arrived at the scene.

Angry by-standers first rushed the truck driver to a hospital and then blocked the road for five hours.

ADC J Lakiang, Extra Assistant Commissioner (EAC) MB Tongper, ASP GD Kharwanlang and DSP G Chacko arrived at the spot to take stock of the situation but by then the angry mob had begun damaging police vehicles and manhandling the officials and police personnel present at the spot. Additional forces had to be summoned to control the over 2000-strong crowd even as the officials and police personnel sought cover from stones pelted by the mob.

The situation was later brought under control by the police led by Kharwanlang.

No arrests have been made so far.

Sources say that this was not the first instance of Sten’s highhandedness and local cabbies have always been victims of his ill temper.

SHILLONG: Assam will declare ‘dry days’ for three consecutive days till February 23 in the bordering districts and will also take other preventive measures to ensure free and fair polls in the bordering areas of Meghalaya.

Ahead of the scheduled polls on February 23, Meghalaya DGP Kulbir Krishan and Chief Secretary WMS Pariat met their counterparts in Dispur on Thursday to discuss the need to ensure free and fair polls in the disputed border areas.

An official source said on Friday that Assam agreed to declare dry day on February 21, 22 and 23 to make sure that the polls in Meghalaya are free from any nuisance.

Both Assam and Meghalaya do not want to see a repeat of Langpih firing incident.

It was on May 14, 2010 that four Khasi villagers were killed and 12 others injured when Assam police personnel opened fire in the disputed area of Langpih in West Khasi Hills bordering Assam.

Both the Governments also want to make sure that the political parties do not rake up the issue of border dispute in the run up to the election for the sake of political mileage.

The meeting also discussed the need to maintain peace in Langpih and other areas along the Assam-Meghalaya border.

During the meeting Assam assured full cooperation to Meghalaya in maintaining law and order in the border areas.

Meanwhile, it was decided that the Election department officials of both Assam and Meghalaya will meet on February 7 in Shillong to ensure that there is peaceful polling in the border areas of the State, an official said.
