By Our Reporter

SHILLONG: The Nongkrem constituency in the State is all set to witness a triangular contest in the upcoming Assembly election scheduled for February 23. Three major political parties of the State– Congress, United Democratic Party and Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP)-are contesting for the honours in the area.

While the Congress will be represented by Lambor Malngiang, Draison Kharshiing is contesting from the UDP and sitting legislator Ardent Basaiawmoit, who left the UDP, will contest on a HSPDP ticket.

Basaiawmoit claimed that many of his supporters have joined the HSPDP and was hopeful that the people of the constituency would elect him for the second time so that the works initiated by him can be carried out.

The sitting legislator though was not available for comments.

His main rival in the last eletion, Lambor Malngiang maintained that the Congress will try its best to win the seat and the party is eyeing an absolute majority in the State.

According to Malngiang, the focus of the party is to get more assistance from the Central Government. He was also of the view that people of the State are satisfied with the implementation of the schemes by the government.

When asked about his expectations in the election, he said, “Let people decide as they are the best judge.”

On the other hand, the UDP candidate Draison Kharshiing, who was denied a Congress ticket, said that the candidate mattered more than the party to the people.

“I am contesting (the election) at the call of the people,” he said.

According to Kharshiing, 17 out of the 19 presidents of the Congress block committees apart from senior leaders Remington Pyngrope and Bindo M Lanong are supporting his candidature.

“Unemployment is a major issue in Nongkrem. Besides, no developmental activities have taken place so I want to work for the development and needs of the people,” he said.

Other candidates in the fray in the constituency are Fairly Bert Kharngi of the BJP, Loniak Marbaniang of the NPP and Hilarious Pohchen who will contest as an Independent.

SHILLONG: Patience is running out for the Trinamool Congress ticket aspirants with the delay on part of the party in fielding candidates.

A ticket aspirant, Serimina Marak, while lamenting the party’s indecisiveness, has decided to resign from the Trinamool Congress.

However, general secretary of TMC, Mahua Moitra, and convener of the Meghalaya Pradesh Trinamool Congress, Ashahel D Shira, on Saturday claimed that they did not know any one by the name of Serimina Marak.

While Moitra said that Shira was entrusted with the affairs of Meghalaya and to deal with the issue of release of candidates’ list, Shira said that efforts were on to announce the names of candidates at the earliest.

However, commenting on the stand of both the TMC leaders, Serimina Marak said that many prominent TMC leaders had contacted her in the past and they know that she was with the party.

“Now since Moitra and Shira are saying that they don’t know me I have the freedom to leave the party,” Marak said.

She also asked the Trinamool leaders to end uncertainty and to make clear whether the party would put up any candidate.

Myanmar aims to improve lives, modernise with new reforms

0

NAYPYITAW: Myanmar’s government will unveil a slew of new reforms to donor countries and international organisations this weekend, aiming to consolidate achievements since the end of military rule in 2011 but also quickly improve the lives of its citizens.

A wide-ranging ‘Framework for Economic and Social Reforms’ to be presented in the capital, Naypyitaw, sets out priorities until 2015 and broader initiatives ‘that will allow Myanmar to become a modern, developed and democratic nation by 2030’.

The document seen by Reuters, which addresses such issues as liberalisation of trade and investment, health and education, transparency and infrastructure, admits Myanmar ‘is way behind neighbouring countries’. President Thein Sein, himself a former junta general, has transformed the country since taking office in March 2011 at the head of a quasi-civilian government. He has introduced sweeping economic reforms, including a more market-oriented exchange rate, released hundreds of political prisoners, and agreed ceasefires with most of the ethnic rebel groups that have fought for decades for autonomy.

Late on Friday he issued a ceasefire order in Kachin state, where tens of thousands of people have been displaced in 20 months of fighting, although rebel leaders would not immediately commit to the truce, suspicious of the government’s motives.

The army’s continued attacks in the state had raised doubts about his control over the military and even led some to question his sincerity about the reform process in general.

Western governments have dropped or eased sanctions imposed on the former junta in recognition of Thein Sein’s reforms, and international firms are keen to move into a country with vast resources, located between China and India and part of a vibrant Southeast Asia heading for closer economic union in 2015.

Improving the environment for foreign investment is a central aim of the latest proposals. (PTI)

US disappointed at Iran’s non-cooperation on n-programme

Washington: The US has said it was “deeply disappointed” at Iran’s failure to accommodate the UN nuclear watchdog over its controversial nuclear programme. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland criticised Iran for missing another chance to cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) by failing to agree on a structured approach and denying the agency access to its Parchin military site, Xinhua reported.

The Parchin military site is suspected by Western powers of being used for conducting nuclear bomb-related experiments.

“Iran were, once again, unable to come to agreement with the IAEA either on a structured approach or on being able to visit Parchin,” Nuland said.

“We’re obviously deeply disappointed that Iran has once again missed an opportunity to cooperate with the IAEA and to provide the international community with the transparency that we’re all seeking in order to resolve our concerns about Iran’s nuclear programme,” she said.

Nuland said discussions with Iran were continuing to set a date and venue for fresh talks with the P5+1 comprising Britain, China, France, Russia, the US and Germany. “You know that we’ve been seeking to address this issue on two tracks,” the spokeswoman said.

“There’s the IAEA track, which is designed to give us all transparency about what’s exactly going on, and then the efforts of the P5+1 to try to get Iran to really roll back whatever may be going on on the military side.” (IANS)

UK contemplates an SAS raid to nail desert al-Qaeda kingpin

0

London: Britain may launch an Osama Bin Laden like ‘kill or snatch’ operation in the Sahara desert to nail the one-eyed al-Qaeda kingpin Mokhtar Belmokhtar, believed to be responsible for a hostage standoff in Algeria.

A crack British team of ‘specialists’ has arrived in Algeria to hunt down the terror chief behind the hostage carnage and Prime Minister David Cameron has said that SAS units are on standby. The Sun reported a squad of crack SAS soldiers, military intelligence gathering experts and specialist cops had been sent to Algeria to pave the way for a far larger special forces “kill team”, if they get the green signal for a full-fledged ground operations.

Cameron told parliament that SAS was on standby to rescue survivors, but the Algerian government had so far rejected five offers for launching an all out operation to nail the desert terror mastermind. Belmokhtar, according to intelligence reports has a 32 strong heavily armed group with him. The Prime Minister said Britain would help lead a robust security response to the crisis and ” will do everything we can to hunt down the people responsible.”

The clamour for the head of Belmokhtar rose as reports said that 10 British hostages were still missing at the remote gas complex in the Sahara. The British team would be based in its embassy complex in Algeirs.

Other hostage nations including Norway, whose citizens are also in danger have also pledged to send their own special forces to the besieged gas plant, with or without Algerian permission, the paper said. Quoting British intelligence reports, The Sun said that it was feared that Belmokhtar’s men were holding British and American captives separately from other hostages apparently to seek to swap them in exchange for Egyptian blind cleric Sheikh Omar Abdel-Rahman and Pakistani Aafia Siddiqui, both being held in jail in US on terrorism charges.
