Washington UK’s ‘greatest foe ever’

London: George Washington has been named as the greatest foe ever faced by the British, according to a contest run by the National Army Museum to identify the country’s most outstanding military opponent.

The first President of US was one of a shortlist of five leaders who topped a public poll and on Saturday was selected as the ultimate winner by an audience of around 70 guests at a special event at the museum, in Chelsea, west London. In second place was Michael Collins, the Irish leader, ahead of Napoleon Bonaparte, Erwin Rommel and Mustafa Kemal Ataturk.

At the event, each contender had their case made by a historian giving a 40 minute presentation. The audience, who had paid to attend the day, then voted in a secret ballot after all five presentations had been made.

“As British officers conceded, he was a worthy opponent,” the Telegraph quoted Stephen Brumwell, who had championed Washington as saying.

The shortlist of five was selected from an initial list of 20 candidates, drawn up by the museum’s curators.

To qualify, each commander had to come from the 17th century onwards – the period covered by the museum’s collection – and had to have led an army in the field against the British, thus excluding political enemies, like Adolf Hitler. The contest was designed to not only identify UK’s most outstanding opponent, but also to draw attention to some lesser-known adversaries.

The one woman on the list was Rani of Jhansi Lakshmi Bai, who fought British forces in nineteenth century India. (ANI)

Zanjeer remake gets green signal

Mumbai: Amidst all controversies revolving around the remake of Amitabh Bachchan starrer Zanjeer, producer Amit Mehra says he has taken the blessings from the film’s writers – Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar.

The remake of Bachchan starrer superhit film, Zanjeer has been in the news regarding copyright and royalty issue.

Both the writers of the 1973 original film had expressed displeasure over the remake. But Amit says he has their permission now to re-make the film.

“We have bought the rights of Zanjeer from my father’s production company, Prakash Mehra. I have met both (Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar) of them to take their blessings. They are special people,” Amit told PTI.

His father Prakash Mehra had produced and directed the original Zanjeer. The action thriller’s screenplay and dialogues were co-written by Javed Akhtar and Salim Khan.

“This is my first film and I wanted to make Zanjeer as it was a superhit film… also I am emotionally connected with it,” he said.

The writers has reportedly asked for a substantial sum of money if Amit wanted to re-translate the Zanjeer script on celluloid.

When asked about the same, Amit said, “I don’t know all this. I am meeting them again, hopefully everything would be fine. But the remake of Zanjeer will be made. I did not ask them for anything. Salim uncle gave me his blessings,” Amit said.

Earlier both the writers had complained that the producers did not consult them before going ahead with the remake plans of Zanjeer.

On the other hand, when asked about the objections that are being raised for the remake of the film, Salim said, “I don’t want to talk about it. It is too premature to say anything. And I don’t understand why is such a big issue is being made.”

The original film had established Amitabh Bachchan as the angry young man of the Hindi cinema.

Telugu actor Ram Charan, son of Chiranjeevi, has been finalised to step into Big B’s role, while Priyanka Chopra is being considered to reprise the role of Jaya Bachchan.

“We have signed Ram Charan, Prakash Raj and Mahie Gill for the film. Talks with Priyanka are going on. Nothing has been confirmed yet on the part of leading lady for the film,” Amit said.

Bachchan may do a cameo in the remake. “Without Amit uncle, ‘Zanjeer’, the original film would have never been made. The talks are on,” Amit said.

The remake version of the film, to be directed by Apoorva Lakhia, would go on floors this month. (PTI)

B’desh allows sending goods to Tripura

Agartala: In a goodwill gesture, Bangladesh government has agreed to allow its territory for ferrying food grains and other essential commodities through Ashuganj port to landlocked Tripura, a top official said on Sunday.

“Bangladesh government has allowed transportation of food grains through Ashuganj port in their territory from Kolkata and the Food Corporation of India (FCI) has taken the initiative to bring the foodgrains using the water route which would cut off the distance and hassles of carrying the supply through the mountainous region by trucks,” said B K Roy, the Commissioner for Food and Civil Supplies.

“We would like to bring 5000 MT rice from Kolkata to Agartala via Ashuganj port bypassing the Assam-Agartala National Highway (NH-44)”, he told PTI.

While the distance between Agartala and Kolkata via Guwahati is 1650 km, it is just 350 km when it is transported through Bangladesh.

“Due to shortage of rail wagons, inadequate storage facilities and various other bottlenecks, the northeastern states have been suffering from poor supply of food grains, especially during the monsoon,” he said.

The northeastern states are largely dependent on supply of food grains from other states like Punjab and Haryana. Roy, however, assured that Tripura has sufficient buffer stock of two months for the rainy season which was created to avoid transport bottlenecks in the Public Distribution System (PDS).

The Centre has agreed provide Rs 25 crore to set up 16 godowns in Tripura for storing 10,000 MT of rice.

India had long been demanding transit and transshipment of goods for the landlocked north eastern region for shortening distance and smooth transportation.

The region has a 4,095 km long border with Bangladesh.

In the monsoon, road transport through Assam via Siliguri in West Bengal becomes extremely difficult due to the hilly terrain, landslide and the occassional flood. (PTI)

Agartala: Two Mumbai-based entrepreneurs have expressed interest in making bamboo-based products like handicrafts, furniture and sticks for Agarbatti (incense stick) making, official sources said on Sunday.

“They have agreed to invest Rs. 80 crore for setting up two industrial units – at the proposed Bamboo Park at Bodhjungnagar – and have already bought five acres of land from us”, Chairman of Tripura Industrial Development Corporation said.

Chief Minister Manik Sarkar laid the foundation stone for the Bamboo Park on January 27 which aimed to ensure value addition to bamboo and also to ensure the rise in economic standards by the increase in production of bamboo based products.

The central government has sanctioned Rs. 29 crore for its development, spread over 69 acres of land which is just 12 km from here.

“Now infrastructures like roads, provision for water and electricity are being built which is likely to be completed by next six to seven months”, he added.

Tripura has registered a 240 per cent absolute growth rate and 35.8 per cent compound annual growth rate in the production of bamboo-based products like handicrafts, furniture and sticks for Agarbatti-making.

Expressing satisfaction at the growth rate, state’s Forest Minister, Jitendra Chowdhury, informed Tripura assembly last month that there had been a commensurate increase in the revenue also.

“While in 2006-07 our turn-over was Rs 28 crore, it grew more than three fold at Rs 93.05 crore this year which represents a 240 per cent absolute growth rate,” Chowdhury said.

Buoyed by the development, the state government has set an ambitious target of Rs 200 crore per annum by 2016.

The minister, who also holds the industry portfolio, said the state earned 80 per cent of its profit in bamboo products by making sticks for Agarbatti which met 60 per cent of the country’s total demand for the product.

He said the state had set a target of Rs 54 crore as revenue next year, compared to Rs 30.93 crore this year, from the sale of bamboo and handicrafts alone. (PTI)
