Guwahati: The flood situation is improving in Assam but at least 13 districts are still under flood waters, the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) said Sunday.

The death toll related to floods and landslides had gone up to 124 till Sunday. While 108 persons have died due to floods, the SDMA authorities have recorded 16 deaths due to landslides, the reports said.

Another 17 persons remained missing in various districts across the state till Sunday, the SDMA said.

Floods have affected over ten lakh people in all the 27 districts of Assam and submerged large tracts of lands including human habitations and fields.

There were severe landslides in three districts of the state – Kamrup Metro district, Dima Hasao district and Cachar district.

The overall flood situation has been improving and waters have been receding at most of the places, SDMA sources told IANS.

The SDMA informed that a total of 1,67,309 people are still living in 451 relief camps in 11 districts of the state till Sunday.

Floods this year have affected a total of 4,540 villages across the state and about 814 villages were still under the grip of flood waters till Sunday, the SDMA report said.

A total of 106 medical teams are helping flood-affected people in the state, the SDMA report said.

The state government had earlier announced an ex gratia payment of Rs.1.50 lakh to the next of kin of each person who died in floods.

The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) has also announced to give ex gratia payment of Rs.1.00 lakh to each to the next of kin of victims.

Apart from this, the Assam Chief Minister has also announced Rs.1.00 lakh to the next of kin of the deceased person from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.

The Assam government has also assured flood-hit people of adequate compensation for the damages to their property and agriculture. This would be covered by the govt. (IANS)
