Chumukedima: Union Human Resource Development, Communication and Information Technology Minister Kapil Sibal on Saturday expressed the hope that the NIT will herald a new beginning for the youth of the state to empower themselves through quality education and bring prosperity through science and engineering which has languished in the past due to inadequate access.

Laying the foundation stone of the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Nagaland, at Chumukedima, near Dimapur on Saturday morning, Mr Sibal, who is visiting Nagaland for the second time, also hoped that the institute will now progress rapidly to create the requisite facilities and infrastructure required for world class engineering education in the state.

The Union Minister suggested that the Nagaland Government and the Centre could work closely to find out the kind of institutions that would be suited to the natural resources available in the state, and asked the state government to put up proposal in the next five-year plan.

Speaking on the occasion, Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio said the state is lacking infrastructure and needs more technical education, including medical college and Law University so that it can be at par with other institutions across the country.

Stating that the state is fast catching up in the Literacy rate, he said such institute will be able to remove the backwardness of the state.

Mr Rio expressed the hope that the NIT, which is now located in the state, will help more Naga students get better education.

The newly inaugurated NIT, which is located up in the hilly terrain of Chumukedima under Dimapur district, has 240 students, out of which there are 21 Naga students. (UNI)
