Dengue claims 3 in Guwahati

 GUWAHATI: Dengue scare has gripped residents of Guwahati with incidence of three deaths because of the deadly disease in a week. One person identified as Raju Dewan from Zoo-Narangi Tinali in the city died of Dengue on Thursday taking the tool up to three so far.

Dewan’s wife, Loni Dewan predeceased him earlier this week due to the same disease.

Another person, Kandarpa Deka from the city died earlier.

A section of locals from Zoo Road area in the city on Thursday went berserk on the road in protest against failure of the State Health

Department and the Municipal administration in taking adequate steps to prevent incidence of the deadly disease.

The protesters burnt effigy of the State Health Minister Dr Himanta Bishwa Sarma on the busy Zoo Road (R G Baruah Road) blocking traffic

during busy hours in the forenoon.

Guwahati Municipal Corporation Mayor Abir Patra said, the administration would need absolute cooperation from the people in fighting Dengue.

He said precautionary steps like smoking and spraying in city localities had been undertaken on regular basis besides efforts to raise awareness level among the people. The health department has set up four centres in the city for testing for suspected dengue cases.
