Editor,

I was born and brought up in Shillong and most of my friends are Khasis and I do have a healthy relationship with them. I do understand the Khasis, (with the total population of under one millions) are worried and should be protected. It is something to be concerned about. But I don’t think that building a wall around your home will solve the problem, in fact it will work against the people. It’s a very poor situation for non-tribals in the state of Meghalaya. Two murders and at least six attempted murders and still not a single arrest. It’s a clear signal of a planned attempt for the removal of the non-tribals from the Khasi Hills. And all viz. the government, the civil society, the so called student unions and associations are executing the act in perfect synchrony. The non-tribals are gagged by the unions and associations so the government need not act and the civil society are either nonexistent or are in the know and part of the play. Not a single place in the world has prospered by perpetuating violence. Violence done on others has in fact turned on to the very society that perpetuates it. Does anyone feel that the few youths committing all the arsons and murders would ever help the Khasi society? Would they after all the non-tribals leave “their” land join some job and help build the society? If your answer is yes, you are living in a fool’s world. The pro-ILP group should take the moral responsibility for the violence and stop the agitations if they are not party to this violence. If not then it is amply clear that they are complicit and are funding and organizing these attacks. As an unfortunate DKHAR in the land of ‘Jaitbynriew’, I would like to say that in another 15-20 years permanent Dkhars who had lived in this State for 3-4 generations would become things of the past. And only immigrant Dkhars brought here by contractors would be the only outsiders you’d see. Because Shillong has become a land of no opportunities! No opportunities in terms of education, or jobs or growth in any sector.

Yours etc.,

M Dev,

Obsession for cricket!

Editor

“Do you agree that Sachin Tendulkar has been the greatest sportsman ever to have played for the Country?” This was the question of the ST Poll dated 17thNovember 2013.I do not hesitate to reply “NO ‘ because to me the greatest Indian sportsman ever known is Dhyan Chand the Indian field hockey player widely considered to be the world’s greatest players of all time, mostly remembered for his goal-scoring feats and for his three Olympic gold medals (1928, 1932, and 1936) in field hockey, during an era when India was dominant in the sport. Known as “The Wizard” for his superb ball control he scored over 1000 goals in his career, from 1926 to 1948. After watching Dhyan Chand in action, the cricket world’s legend Don Bradman remarked, “He scores goals like runs in cricket” and mind you its more to difficult to score a goal in a hockey match than to score many runs in a single cricket match. Moreover, unlike cricket, hockey was played by major sporting countries then and even now for which the competition was and is always stiff. In Indian language Dhyan Chand is known as Hockey ka jaadugar which means magician of the hockey game. They broke his stick in Holland to check if there was a magnet inside; in Japan they decided it was glue; in Germany Adolf Hitler wanted to buy his stick. Legend has it that the Fuhrer was so impressed by Dhyan Chand’s wizardry with the stick that he offered the Indian a chance to move to Germany and to the post of Colonel in his army, which the Indian is said to have declined with a smile . Even today, Dhyan Chand remains a legendary figure in Indian and world hockey. The man is revered across the world .The Astro-turf hockey pitch at the Indian Gymkhana Club in London has been named after him. Residents of Vienna, Austria, honoured him by setting up a statue of him with four hands and four sticks, depicting his control and mastery over the ball. A tube station has been named after him in London in the run-up to the 2012 Games. The National Stadium, built in New Delhi for the first Asian Games in 1951, was later named as Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium. August 29, Dhyan Chand’s birthday, is celebrated as National Sports Day in India. Sports-related awards such as the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, Arjuna Award and Dronacharya Awards are given on this day at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. India’s highest award for lifetime achievement in sports is the Dhyan Chand Award which has been awarded annually from 2002 to sporting figures who not only contribute through their performance but also contribute to the sport after their retirement. Dhyan Chand is also now immortalised in the Amar Chitra Katha comic book series.

For today’s generation the greatest Indian sportsman will most probably be Sachin Tendulkar because the current generation didn’t have the privilege of seeing Dhyan Chand. on television and the other media as they have seen Sachin now and many may not have read about him. As a pre-independence India sportsman, Dhyan Chand played for nothing but pride. As a sportsman in independent India, he played for the nation’s glory. Whether he needs to be given a Bharat Ratna would perhaps not be in his best interest now. Remembering him, remembering what he did, and injecting some pride in Indian hockey to bring back its lost glory would be the biggest tribute we as a nation can pay to him.

Yours etc.,
