Elephants come out of jungle, tea workers keep away
Binnaguri: A herd of 45 elephants, including six calves, entered Binnaguri cantonment in Jalpaiguri district early today leading to a halt in work at Binnaguri tea estate. The workers of Binnaguri tea garden did not report for duty as the elephants came out of the forest and stood near the army camp. However, there was no news of any damage caused by the elephants, whose herd this time was perhaps the largest seen so far. Forest department sources said 27 tuskers returned to the forest as the day progressed and now only 18 were still in the cantonment. Forest department personnel rushed to the spot to keep a watch over the situation as the presence of calves make the elephants sensitive, the sources said. All the elephants are expected to return to the forest when it turns dark, the sources added. Elephants come out of the jungle in search of food for themselves and their calves. (PTI)
BJP leader, accomplices torture 2 in UP
Balrampur: Two persons were beaten up and doused in petrol allegedly by a local BJP leader and his accomplices on suspicion of theft, police said on Thursday. Shahid (28) and Dayaram (25) were forcibly taken to a saw mill by BJP leader K D Shukla and his two accomplices, where the duo was beaten up and petrol was poured on their private parts last night, Station House Officer Raj Kumar Yadav said. He said that the accused even tried to electrocute the two but they were rescued by the police. The SHO said that a belt and a bottle have been recovered from the spot. A case has been lodged against the leader and two others identified as Shukla and Sonu Pandit in this connection and further action is being taken, he said.(PTI)
9 booked for illegal sand mining in UP
Kanpur:Tightening the noose on illegal sand mining mafia, Kanpur district administration has filed FIR against nine persons for their alleged involvement in such activities. Cases have been registered against Raghvendra Singh, Prem Singh, Makkhan Tiwari, Deepu Pradhan, Pawan Yadav, Deepu Shukla, Shibbu Tiwari, Rajesh and Deewan at Bithoor police station, Kanpur District Magistrate Roshan Jacob said. The district administration has been directed to submit a report so that these accused can be tried under Gangster and Goonda Acts and fine can be collected from offenders, she said. The DM said several complaints regarding illegal mining activities were being received from rural areas- Sivrajpur, Bithoor, Chaubaypur and Maharajpur of the district. Jacob said that she visited several rural areas yesterday where illegal mining was taking place. The clampdown comes close on the heels of the arrest of one Rajan Singh for his alleged involvement in illegal mining from Narval area here. Rajan was booked on several counts of illegal mining and Rs 43 lakh fine was imposed on him, district authorities had said.(PTI)
Two bodies recovered from Ganga river bank in Bhagalpur
Bhagalpur:Two bodies were recovered on the bank of Ganga river near Barari Ghat under Barari police station area in this district on Thursday morning. Police said here that acting on the basis of information given by local people, two bodies were recovered near Barari Ghat.Preliminary investigation indicated that criminals had killed two people with sharp edged weapon and dumped the body near Barari Ghat.”The bodies had not been identified so far,” police said, adding that the bodies had been sent to Bhagalpur Medical College Hospital for postmortem. Retired Army man killed in road accident
Jalandhar:A retired Subedar of the Army was killed when the car in which he was travelling collided with a truck on Ludhiana-Jalandhar National Highway at Goraya area in the district, police said on Thursday. Subedar Raghubir Singh, a resident of Una district in Himachal Pradesh, was returning home from Ludhiana. He was killed after he lost control over his speeding car as a tyre burst and it collided with the truck late last evening, they added. The body has been handed over to the family after post mortem, police said, adding that a probe is on but no FIR has been lodged yet. (PTI)
Thane builder gets threat call from gangster Pujari
Thane: A builder from Dombivali received an extortion call purportedly from fugitive gangster Ravi Pujari, demanding Rs 2 crore, police said on Thursday. According to the complaint filed by builder Ram Keshav Bhagat last night, he received the call on March 30 around 9.50 PM from an international number where the caller identified himself as Ravi Pujari. Before the caller hung up, he allegedly threatened to kill Bhagat if he fails to pay up, a media release from Thane police said. Police have registered offences under sections 384 and 385of the IPC (PTI)
