SHILLONG: In the wake of spurt in rape cases, Union Minister for women & child development Maneka Gandhi wants Meghalaya government to pay attention to each case of rape so that the victims can get timely justice.
“Each of the rape cases in Meghalaya has to be looked at separately,” the Union Minister said, while speaking to the media persons on Monday.
Maneka was in city to inaugurate the regional conference on various aspects related to legal adoption.
According to the Union Minister, the state Social Welfare Minister and her team are looking at each cases of rape in Meghalaya.
Maneka also informed that she had discussed with the concerned authorities in the state regarding the growing rape cases against women and children in Meghalaya and the need to address the same.
The statement of the Union minister assumes significance as 43 crimes were committed against women in Meghalaya in 2015 and 219 crimes against children in the same year.
Besides, the recent case of the brutal rape and murder of a 19 year old girl from Upper Shillong had evoked protests from several quarters.
Adoption process: Earlier, speaking at the Regional Conference of North Eastern States on Child Adoption’ at the State Convention Centre,   Gandhi asked the Northeastern states to speed-up their child adoption process so that more children can be put for adoption.
