SHILLONG: The Congress in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) has decided to sit in the opposition following a meeting held on Monday afternoon.
Addressing the Press, newly-elected Congress Parliamentary Party secretary, Grace Mary Kharpuri said, “We have decided to sit in the opposition. We will be a strong opposition.”
Asked about the contentious defection of MDCs with the anti-defection Bill not implemented in District Councils, she said, “All of us are intact.”
Congress emerged as the single largest party in the KHADC winning 10 seats. On Saturday, Congress leaders approached the UDP president, Donkupar Roy in the hope of stitching an alliance with UDP who won 6 seats.
Regarding Congress party’s attempt to woo UDP, the Congress leaders said that politics is dynamic. General secretary of Congress, HM Shangpliang said, “Our offer and option is still open ”
Congress leaders present at the meeting included Shillong MP, Vincent Pala, East Khasi Hills District president, Kennedy Khyriem and four winning Congress MDCs.
