The Union Ministry for Environment has taken up a comprehensive scheme to set up some new wild life sanctuaries in the North-East.

Talking to newsmen here this week the Union Deputy Minister for Environment, Mr. Digvijay Singh, said that a national park was being set up at the famous Balphakram area in Garo Hills. The adjacent Siju sanctuary, which is already in existence, would be integrated with the National Park.

He informed that a flora sanctuary would be created near the Tura ridge which is the hub of the original citrus genes.

Mr Singh said that at Jatinga in the North Cachar area of Assam a game sanctuary would be instituted covering an area of 130 sq.km.

In Manipur, where two national parks are in existence at Ukhrul and Loktak area, decision had been made to set up two more – in the North and Sough Districts.

Mr Singh said in reply to a question “our funding is ready, it is upto the State Governments to do the mapping. It is dependent on how soon they do the ground work.”
