Johannesburg: Former South Africa captain Shaun Pollock termed Gary Kirsten’s appointment as chief coach of the national side as a “good move.”

Cricket South Africa were desperately looking for Corrie van Zyl’s and after persistent requests, Kirsten agreed on a two-year contract.

“I am really chuffed for Gary; it really is a good move for South African cricket,” said Pollock, who led South Africa in 26 Tests and 97 one-day internationals was quoted as saying by the local media.

“I am sure the methods he used that were such a success with India, he will bring with him to the South African camp,” Pollock said.

Pollock’s new-ball partner Allan Donald will be the bowling coach.

While Kirsten will kick-start his new assignment from August 1, Donald will start earlier as he will be accompanying the South Africa ‘A’ team for some the series that are lined up.

“I’m delighted by the appointment and consider it a major honour. To coach South Africa was always going to be a massive privilege and it is something that I am humbled by and I am certainly looking forward to working with the players,” Kirsten said in Johannesburg on Monday.

Kirsten had also said “while my coaching philosophy will not be any different than it was for the Indian team, I always endeavour to influence players in a positive way and give them options so that they can grow as cricketers and as people.”

SA’s first international assignment is in October when Australia visit for a two-match Test series, and three ODIs plus a T20 international. (PTI)
