SHILLONG: The newly inducted Community and Rural Development (C&RD) Minister Saleng M Sangma on Wednesday said he would take steps to remove the middlemen who are considered a hurdle for implementation of the various Centrally-sponsored programmes.

“The presence of middlemen has affected implementation of various schemes. We are aware that they are taking a share from all the schemes. It is because of this practice that the benefit of such schemes does not reach the real beneficiaries,” Saleng said on his first day of office.

The first-time minister was sworn in on Tuesday along with two other Congress legislators — AL Hek and Shitlang Pale.

Warning the non-performing officials of stern action, he said, “I would like to have officers who are committed to their job.”

Saleng also said he would not give any political patronage and show any favouritism to any individual or groups.

“I would like to bring in a clean and effective system where the people at large would be benefited from all the schemes,” the C&RD Minister said.
