Police admit ‘mistake’

By Our Reporter

SHILLONG: The State Police have attributed the incorrect entries in police diary in connection with the Shillong jailbreak case to “illiteracy” and “overwork” of the policemen.  The wrong entries were the work of illiterate constables, Mukesh Singh, the then SP of Jaintia Hills, told Justice (retd) SP Rajkhowa Commission of Inquiry while replying to a question of SCAMoD lawyer during a hearing on Monday He also mentioned that the constables were performing round-the-clock duties besides other responsibilities. The SP, however, denied allegations put forth by the Steering Committee Against Murder of Democracy (SCAMoD) counsel that no crude bomb and revolver were recovered from the two under trial prisoners — Ramu Thapa and Khrawborlang Mawnai.

He said the two escapees of the Shillong jailbreak were brought in a police vehicle with sufficient security.

They were produced at the Jowai court with a prayer that the duo be placed under police custody, he said.

‘Piracy’ of songs

By Our Reporter

SHILLONG: The St Anthony’s Higher Secondary School here has objected to “unauthorised” use of the school’s songs as mobile ring tones. The songs “Lyer Lyer” and “Mei Kha” composed by C Khongwir and L Syiem respectively were used in the school’s annual concert in the play “Ka Paksyntiew” in 2006. “Such piracy of songs of the school is a blunder and an infringement on the rights of the composers and original singers,” the school’s principal said in a press statement, while warning such users of legal action if they failed to stop usage of the songs immediately.
