Water level recedes in city, normalcy returns

SHILLONG: After Wedne-sday’s heavy downpour, the city got some respite on Thursday, as rainfall was comparatively lesser. The water in those areas which were flooded from Wednesday’s rainfall has subsided and public and vehicle movement was back to normal.

The local cabbies bound for Polo and beyond towards Jaiaw, Malki took to their normal routes, as they were unable to ply the Polo routes which were submerged in water on Wednesday. Water was seen cleared in the road from Polo towards NEEPCO, Fourth Furlong and beyond. “This area is in total mess and we don’t know, what is the way out,” said a Bivar Road resident.

Residents of Bivar Road, Polo, Lower Jail Road said that they are dependent on Polo for all their requirements, which gets badly hampered due to the flood situation every year. On the other hand, residents of Laitumkhrah, Cleave Colony were also astonished to see rampant flood situation in these areas, which they did not see in earlier years. “What else is left to be seen here in Shillong? City type summer, food inflation and now flood,” said an exasperated resident from Laitumkhrah.

Elsewhere, in the town localities that are on hill tops such as Lachaumiere, were free from water-logging. floods. But Thursday’s respite had other after effects. It left behind clogged drains and garbage vomited out by the river and drains. A defense personal was seen cleaning the drain near Rhino Point. But the rain has cleaned up the mess that is seen in many rivers of the town.

Dr HG Pathak, DDGM, RMC, Guwahati speaking to The Shillong Times said, “The seasonal or monsoon trough is observed to be flowing from Rajasthan to northeastern region through Bikaner, Jaipur, Allahabad, Goalpara, Jorhat and extending upto 1.5 km above MSL.” “It is also observed that two cyclonic circulations have developed, one in Eastern UP and neighborhood extending upto mid-tropospheric level and another one in Central Assam and neighborhood extending upto 3.1 km ASL,” he added.
