SHILLONG: Repair of the main reservoir at Umjasai river near Shillong Peak, which suffered serious damage due to incessant rains in the past few weeks, will be completed within 15 days, Urban Affairs Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh said on Tuesday. The minister, after attending a joint meeting of the PHE and Municipal Administration departments, said the main pipe leading to the water tank at Rngi Jynriew in Nongthymmai was totally damaged due to flash floods affecting water supply in Nongshilliang, Pohktieh, Dum Dum, Lumiawblot and Nongrim Hills areas. However, alternative measures have been adopted for smooth supply of water from the reservoir in areas like Nongthymmai, Laitumkhrah, Malki, Lachumiere, Keating Road and Lumparing, the minister said, adding that steps are being taken to ensure regular supply of water even though the quantity would not be the same. Meanwhile, Rs 20 lakh has been earmarked through the JNNURM to restore the British-era reservoir at Umjasai river, Ampareen said. She also said a huge water tank with 50 lakh litres capacity would be constructed somewhere in the fruit garden at Cleve Colony.
