SHILLONG: Any data on crime will be a mouse click away with the State Police going to have a “Crime Control and Tracking Network System (CCTNS)” within two years.
The CCTNS, which will link all the police stations of the State with the police headquarters via high-speed Internet, is expected to help tackle the growing crime rate in a more efficient way.
“The State is advancing well compared to other states in this regard. Tender bids for the project have already been received and just the contract is to be awarded for installing the CCTNS,” Ashok Suri Kumar, consultant to the State IT department, told reporters on Wednesday.
The project, which got delayed due to changes in the hierarchy in the State Police, is now expected to be operational by 2013.
“CCTNS is part of government’s e-governance plan to improve facilities of collection, storage, retrieval, analysis, transfer and sharing of data and information between police stations, state headquarters and central police organisations,” he added.
Under CCTNS, FIRs can be filed online and status of a case can be ascertained sooner which will boost conviction rate in the State, Kumar said.
The Central Government is preparing a software for the Rs 15-crore project which is part of a larger plan at national level.
The main project is being implemented by the National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) as a nodal central agency mandated to implement the mammoth network in all the states in collaboration with other enforcement agencies.
With the proposed system, the scientific laboratories and forensic laboratories will also be connected which will make faster submission of investigation reports related to various crimes in the states.
Once installed in the state, the apprehended persons who will be taken to a police station where he will be photographed and personal information would be recorded.
The move will become a part of huge cache of information on criminals in the state that will be shared with police authorities of several other states.
