SHILLONG: The indigenous residents of Keating Road area of the city have alleged that the new Rangbah Shnong who was elected was given the Sanad by the Syiem of Mylliem against the wishes of the residents.
It is learnt that at a meeting of the Durbar Pyllun on Sunday at the Keating Road based Iaki-Tori Complex conducted by the residents of the area and neighboring localities strong reservations were expressed over the action of the Syiem of Mylliem as they alleged that the Syiem did not take the general consensus while giving the Sanad (appointment letter) to the Rangbah Shnong.
It is alleged by the Durbar Pyllun that the so called Durbar Shnong was granted authority by the Syiem even though it consisted of members of a particular “family” only thereby indicating nepotism.
Though the Durbar Pyllun was not against the idea of granting a Sanad as a signal of authority to an indigenous tribal institution, it however pointed out that a consensus should have been arrived at after taking due consultations with the local residents / land owners and other communities, who are genuine residents of the area.
Meanwhile, the Durbar Pyllun unanimously elected Aibor Wankhar (Rangbah Shnong) besides other office bearers such as the Deputy Rangbah Shnong, Secretary, Treasurer and three executive committee members after a prolonged discussion.
It is learnt that the motive of the Durbar is to nominate to the post of Rangbah Shnong a resident who is well conversant with the locality. A resolution was also taken by the new Durbar Shnong to officially submit a formal request to the Syiem of Hima Mylliem for granting due recognition and the Sanad to Aibor Wankhar.
Meanwhile, the KHADC refused to comment on the controversy, stating that they are still following up the case.
“We cannot comment on this matter at the moment”, said KHADC Chief Executive Member, PN Syiem while talking to reporters here on Tuesday.
