SHILLONG: Around 100 people were taken ill after consuming snacks at a function at Qualapatty here recently. The victims including nine children ate sandwiches at the programme after attending a foundation stone laying ceremony of Church of God Hostel at Mawpat.

Ten persons, including nine children, were admitted to the NEIGRIHMS while others were taken to Nazareth Hospital and Dr H Gordon Roberts Hospital.

Out of the 10 persons admitted to the NEIGRIHMS, seven were released by Thursday.

One girl child, who was admitted in ICU in critical condition, was taken to ward, NEIGRIHMS sources said on Thursday.

“It could be a case of possible contamination of food, as the people had fallen ill after having the sandwiches,” NEIGRIHMS spokesperson Dr B Borgohain said. The victims complained of vomiting and diarrhoea as they were admitted to the hospitals.
