Legal literacy for prisoners

 TURA: Meghalaya State Legal Services Authority (MSLSA), Shillong, in collaboration with the District Administrations of East and West Garo Hills, organised Legal Literacy classes at the District Jails of Tura and Williamnagar for its inmates to spread awareness and educate them on legal issues.

J.R. Marak, Advocate, in his address at the Tura jail informed that Legal Services Authority Act came into effect in 1987 with the main objectives of providing free and competent legal services to weaker sections of society and to organize Lok Adalats.

V.K. Mantri, Addl. District Magistrate, West Garo Hills, graced the occasion as chief guest. Addressing the gathering briefly he said the main objective of holding such legal classes was to ensure that justice is not denied to any citizen. He urged the inmates to make use of the opportunity.

Various legal topics such as Legal Aid & Lok Adalat, Plea Bargaining , FIR, Bail and Rights of Prisoners were later discussed by eminent advocates.

Among others present at the occasion were W.R. Marak, EAC, Tura and Smt. F. Wahlang, Superintendent, District Jail, Tura.
