SHILLONG: A day after the GNLA claimed that Kharkutta MLA Omillo K Sangma’s Personal Security Officer (PSO) had joined the outfit ranks owing to widespread discrimination in the State Police department the State Government on Thursday strongly denied the allegations saying there was no discrimination in the police force.
The PSO, Hubert Marak, is alleged to have defected to the GNLA due to large-scale discrimination by senior police officers of the State.
The rebuttal by the Government came even as a worried Home Minister HDR Lyngdoh convened a meeting with senior police officials of the State on Thursday.
Lyngdoh also directed DGP Prem Singh to convene a thorough probe on the alleged large-scale discrimination of junior personnel by senior officials.
Later, talking to media persons the Home Minister said, “It is a baseless allegation and I am confident that such things do not happen in the police department.”
He was, however, quick to point out that if there is any evidence of discrimination within the police ranks then corrective measures would be taken to rectify them.
Lyngdoh also sounded confident that the combing operations presently underway in the jungles of Garo Hills to flush out the militants would soon produce results.
The Minister also maintained that the law and order situation in Garo Hills is under control and the special police teams are trying their best to tackle the insurgent group operating in Garo Hills.
Meanwhile, a press release issued by the Office of the Director General of Police has also denied the allegation.
“The allegation has been made with the malicious intent to denigrate the Meghalaya Police in the eyes of the public and to sow seeds of discord between different tribes,” the statement said.
