SHILLONG: Twenty five years back, SM Ali and his wife were surprised to see that their daughter, Nahid, suffering from epileptic fits and this sight moved the couple so much so that they decided to come up with a school for children in need of special education which is today known as Dwar Jingkyrmen.
Twenty five years have gone by and this school under the aegis of Ladies and Children Recreation centre has rendered its services to thousands of specially able children.
The school which kicked off its silver jubilee celebrations here on Monday has dedicated itself to embracing, educating and moulding such children. In fact, Dwar Jingkyrmen has a basketful of unripe talents.
To mark the occasion, a colourful function was organised here in the city which was a delight for many disabled children who have become a part of the school.
Speaking at the function, the chief guest, Former State Minister RG Lyngdoh said that the people should look into their ability and not the disability.
“We need to give them support by deeds and not by words,” Lyngdoh added while addressing the gathering here on Monday.
The school at present has a more than 100 students with 8 special educators.
Speaking to media persons about the school on the sidelines of the function, founder of the school, SM Ali said that the North East region lacks special educators while maintaining that the region requires around 60,000 special educators.
