Gauhati HC to hold ‘mega holiday court’

 Guwahati: Gauhati High Court is going to organize a ‘mega holiday court’ on August 27 next to clear some of the mounting arrears. A source informed that every judicial officers attending the mega holiday court was expected to handle at least 400 cases.

The number of cases that were pending in Gauhati High Court till December , 201o was 40,636 while the figure was 45,315 at the end of year 2009. The total number of cases that are pending in different courts in Assam as on date is 2.44 lakh.

The incumbent Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court Madan B Lokur often raises concern while speaking in various for a about mounting arrears in the court basically due to lack of adequate number of judges . He has initiated innovative steps like video hearing facilities in the High Court benches at Shillong (Meghalaya) and Agartala (Tripura) for quick disposal of importance cases pending in those Benches.

Through the video hearing facility the Principal seat of the High Court in Guwahati can hear and dispose of cases related to those satellite State benches while saving the time and money of litigants and their counsels who otherwise would have to come down to Gauhati to attend hearing of those cases here.
