Woman forced into prostitution, rescued

Thane: A 20-year-old woman from Assam who was kidnapped and brought to Bhiwandi in the district for prostitution, has been rescued by a team of officials of the Crime Unit of Bhiwandi police.

The police have arrested a woman for allegedly forcing young girls into prostitution, police said on Wednesday.

Police Inspector R K Wadekar of the Bhiwandi crime unit said that acting on a tip off, a team of police personnel, led by him, raided the Mumbaiwali Building in Hanuman Tekdi area of the town and found Asma Khatun Nurzulali of Godamghat, Miri Bhasti, Atarammalli, of Charadwar taluka in Tejpur district of Assam, locked in the brothel. One killed in road accident

Kohima: One person was killed on the spot when he was hit by a running vehicle in the Longpong Ward of Tuli town under Mokokichung district of Nagaland.

Official sources said that the deceased was identified as one Merinuklen, (86), a native of Merangkong village and presently a resident of Longpong ward of Tuli.

He was hit yesterday by a speeding van, when he was on foot.

The driver of the van, who was from Imphal district of Manipur, was arrested by police and investigation was on ascertain the cause of the accident, sources said. (UNI)

Nagaland Health Dept workers may go on stir

Kohima: Doctors, officers and staff of the department of Health and Family Welfare (H&FW) have threatened to go for an indefinite closure of all health establishments if the concerned authority fails to arrest the culprit of the April 8 last incident within 15 days by the authorities.

Incidentally, on April 8, armed miscreants had barged into the Directorate of Health and Family Welfare of the Government of Nagaland and attempted to extort money from the Dealing and Disbursing Officer (DDO) at gunpoint.

The situation had been brought under control through the intervention of other staff members.

The Principal Director had subsequently lodged an FIR at the North Police Station on the same day while the Directorate observed a one-day protest closure of the department the next day. (UNI)

Manipur observes integrity day

Imphal: The 14th integrity day was observed here on Thursday at Shumang Leela Shanglen organised by All Manipur United Clubs’ Organisation (AMUCO).

The day is observed to commemorate a historic march of August 4, 1997 carried out to safeguard the territorial integrity of Manipur. Organisation president K T Rahman and large numbers of people attended the function. United Committee Manipur (UCM) president S Dilip said the Centre is holding talks with the NSCN(IM) while the outfit is trying to ‘divide’ Manipur and carry out ‘evil designs’ in the state. (UNI)
