RBYF opposes Govt move

 SHILLONG: After KSU, the RBYF has also opposed the decision of the Government to recognise the people from Marngar community as scheduled tribe.

People from Marngar community reside mainly in the Raid Marngar in Ri-Bhoi district.

“We oppose this decision of the Government. We have failed to understand how could the Government issue such certificate to the people of this community who do not belong to the State,” the RBYF general secretary LK Sawkmie said in a statement issued here on Friday.

He informed that the federation would hold a meeting at Umsning on August 12 which would be attended by the Rangbah Shnongs of the various areas under Ri-Bhoi district to discuss this issue.

Earlier, the KSU had criticized the Government for not taking into consideration the views of the people before taking this very vital and far reaching decision.

In a memorandum submitted to Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma recently, KSU president Samuel Jyrwa also questioned how could the Government recognize the people from Marngar community as Khasis without the consent of the Khasi people.

“We condemn the arbitrary order of the Government,” he said adding that the Government must revoke the order immediately.

He warned that if the Government failed to act accordingly, the KSU would be left with no other option but to take the matter to the people.
