IT raid on cardiologist’s residence

 SHILLONG: The residence of a city based cardiologist in the city was raided by Income tax sleuths on August 6 last. A source from the Income tax Office here said that the cardiologist’s entire group (read family) who are involved in accumulating wealth beyond known sources were raided by a special team from the Income Tax Office, North Eastern Region, Guwahati and was assisted by some officials from the Shillong Office.

Though the source did not divulge any information about the amount of money being seized from the cardiologist and his family members, but unconfirmed sources said that the amount runs into several crores. The unaccounted amount, it is learnt, was stashed away in the washroom of the cardiologist’s residence. The source, while explaining that there is a blanket ban on his department here regarding dishing out any information to the media, said that the raid originated from Guwahati and the department here has no say on the matter as they only assisted the team. He also said that he cannot disclose the name of the cardiologist.

Meanwhile, a veil of secrecy surrounds the Income Tax Department with no one willing to divulge anything. When contacted, the personal assistant of TM Das, Director, Income Tax, North Eastern Region said that the Director is out of station and will resume office on August 17. When asked to hand over the phone to his deputy, the official said that besides the Director nobody else is allowed to speak to the media.
