NEW DELHI: Former Speaker Purno A Sangma Leader of Opposition in the State Assembly Conrad K Sangma have cut short their party’s ongoing programme here and rushed to Garo Hills to oversee relief and rehabilitation operations following the deadly landslides that claimed eight lives on Tuesday morning.
Before leaving for Tura, Purno told The Shillong Times that he has already taken up the matter with the Union Government. “The Centre should step in to help the thousands of affected people in Garo Hills at this moment of crisis,” he said.
Union Minister of State Agatha Sangma and Rajya Sabha MP Thomas Sangma, both of whom hail from Garo Hills, would be visiting the affected region later, in view of the ongoing Monsoon session of the Parliament.
The former Speaker also urged his party members to take up relief work in a massive way.
Meanwhile, the Purno Sangma Foundation has announced an ex gratia relief of Rs two lakh each for the family members of the victims.
