SHILLONG: After incidents that had disrupted the peace and harmony of the people living in the Indo-Bangladesh borders, the services, reliability and security measures offered by the BSF to the people of the borders was highly criticized.
The protections and security offered by the BSF to the people living in the border areas has drawn wide criticisms from various groups following the recent attack of one Nikres Khongdup of Lapalang village in the southern slopes of East Khasi Hills on the Indo-Bangladesh border.
The Ri-War Welfare Organisation (RWO) has expressed concerned about the plight of people residing at the Indo-Bangladesh while mentioning that the illegal intrusion of Bangladeshis into Indian territory has threatened the people of that area but no serious effects was made by the BSF to protect the local people residing along the borders.
In a statement issued by the organisation recently, stated that the recent incident of Nikres Khongdup showed the lukewarm attitude of the BSF to protect the border.
“This kind of functioning had only encouraged the Bangladeshis to sneak into India in order to take away the agricultural produces of the villagers”, alleged the organisation’s general secretary, Rishonghok Khongsdam while adding that the recent attack should be a wake-up call for the BSF authorities and the Government of India to be more alert to protect its people.
“The state Government should bear all the medical expenditure incurred by Khongdup and such matters should be looked at from a serious point of view as it concern the life of the people living in those areas”, the general secretary added.
It may be mentioned that recently, a highly placed BSF official informed that the injured person, Nikres Khongdup knew the Bangladeshis and had been involved in bootlegging across the international border.
“It might be due to some misunderstanding between them that led to Thursday’s incident,” he added.
However, according to the family members and villagers of Lapalang, Khongdup was attacked by three Bangladeshi intruders while he was fishing at Wah Borhil area situated in the fringes of the border.
